Native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, the desert tortoise is specially adapted to survive in hot, dry environments. It spends much of its life in underground burrows to escape the heat and can store water in its bladder for long periods. As a long-lived herbivore, the desert tortoise plays an important role in maintaining healthy desert ecosystems.
